Fatsia japonica

- +

A medium sized evergreen shrub. It has very large, attractive leaves that gives you the impression it is a tropical plant. Fatsia japonica makes a great contrast planted next to other plants, as it is so different to most plants, it is a gem of a shrub. The white flowers are pleasant, but really this is a very popular plant because it is planted for its wonderful form, and its large leaves. It is hardy, however the new growth is quite tender and can suffer from minor frost damage. Fatsia is best in full sun so the dramatic leaves can have their full effect, but they will grow in shade too. Fatsia is quite happy in most lightly acidic soils as long the soil is nutritious, fertilising all new plants is wise until they establish.
