Common or English Holly is very versatile and naturally grows in woodland and hedges. It makes a really thick evergreen hedge that is perfect for marking boundaries or for screening solutions. It has the added benefit of being very spiky indeed, seriously unappealing to get past for burglars. They flower in early spring with small white flowers and of course berries quickly form. Berries turn red for Autumn, and tend to stay on the plant through Winter too, great for the birds.
How many should you plant? 3 plants per meter, but if you you buy the 125-150cm or larger, plant just 2 per meter. It really depend how quickly you want it to come together.
How fast do they grow? ilex aquifolium is slow growing, cut your hedge once a year, more regularly for topiary.
Hardiness? Frost resistant hardy plants.
Soil type? Acidic, when planting it is best to add some ericaceous compost to help then take.
